It's My Birthday Month!

Outside of my husband ensuring my birthday is special, I haven't taken the initiative to plan my own birthday festivities. A few of my friends always plan activities for their birthdays, but I tend to play down the day. But then COVID hit, and my 40th birthday last year reminded me that celebrations are a gift. It’s the only day where the focus is entirely on you (especially as a mom!), so why not take advantage? Starting this year, I vowed to always make sure that I plan something for my birthday. If you’re like me, you should start doing the same!

My husband bought an Ooni (Outdoor Pizza Oven), so I had a Pizza Party at our house. It worked out perfectly. I saw friends I hadn’t seen in ages. We laughed, we ate, and everyone enjoyed themselves. I’m already thinking about next year!

Now I’m asking myself: why the heck didn’t I do this before? Perhaps out of fear (will anyone even come?) combined with laziness (I don't have time to think about this). I had a busy week and almost canceled, but my husband encouraged me to stick with it - and I’m so glad he did! My daughter turned 15 and didn't want to do anything to celebrate - I wonder where she got that from? Hopefully she saw me celebrate this year and will be encouraged to celebrate on her own terms next year.

Corporate Ecology

Quick read for corporate leaders on key ideas to keep in mind when building successful teams. I always seek advice that is uncommon. One important tip was to be patient with your team.

"Success takes time, which means you must be patient with your people as a leader. Pour into them, empower them, give them opportunities to stretch and grow—and make sure that you give them an appropriate time frame in which to do it."

I always enjoy learning about different backgrounds and families. Below is the story of refugee Fatima Matar. Fatima shares and interesting story of discrimination taking the form of being a single mother. Her story made me realize how fortunate I am not to have the same experience. Fatima's resilience, determination, and voice is inspiring. Read her story below.
